Rimsky-Korsakov and his Heritage in Historical Perspective

Venue: Rimsky-Korsakov Apartment Museum (branch of the St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music)

The four-day international conference N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and his heritage in historical perspective will take place in St Petersburg, at the Museum-flat of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, on March, 1920 in 2010.

The conference is scheduled for Rimsky-Korsakovs birthday. The word heritage is here interpreted in the wider sense denoting the cultural mission and creative activity of the great composer.

In the first session Rimsky-Korsakovs family in the musical world we are planning to recall several half-forgotten (or even completely forgotten) names of N. Rimsky-Korsakovs descendants, who inherited the musical genes of their father and grandfather: Nikolais children Andrey, Mikhail and Vladimir, and grand-children Georgy, Liudmila and Tatiana, as well as those relatives whose musical activity enriched the life of the family: the composers wife Nadezhda Nikolaevna, his son-in-law Maximilian Steinberg and his daughter Nadezhda Steinberg, Nikolais daughter-in-law Yulia Veisberg, his grand-nephew Oleg Rimsky-Korsakov and others.

In this session, Rimsky-Korsakovs descendants from Moscow and St.Petersburg will take part. They will share their memories of the family.

The second session The traditions of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov in composing and teaching: followers and opponents will be devoted to:

Rimsky-Korsakovs lessons (in harmony and orchestration classes);

Ex-student-teachers in terms of the succession and development of their educational systems;

Ex-student-composers in a dialogue with the musical heritage of their teachers.

Within the bounds of the conference we are planning to give a concert and to open an exhibition of documents and materials.

The conferences programme committee consists of:

Lidia Ader (the Senior Researcher of the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-flat),

Nina Kostenko (the Head of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-flat).

Working languages of the conference are Russian and English. Time-limit for first session papers being 30 minutes, discussion - 10 minutes. Time-limit for second session papers being 20 minutes, discussion - 10 minutes.

Please submit abstracts for papers of no less then 300 and no more than 500 words, which have to be sent by post, fax or e-mail.

The deadline for paper abstracts is 1 November 2009. Papers and materials of the conference will be published in 2010. The notification of acceptance will be sent out at the end of December 2009 at the latest.

The museum-flat of Rimsky-Korsakov will not able to cover participants expenses.
